IIT JAM Mathematics Eligibility 2027: Who Can Apply
IIT JAM Mathematics eligibility has two layers: any completed or final-year bachelor's degree lets you sit the paper, but each IIT sets its own admission rule, mostly four semesters of mathematics.
By Sunil Bansal, Founder · Updated 10 Oct 2026

Key takeaways
- Anyone with a completed or final-year bachelor's degree can sit JAM 2027 Mathematics, but each IIT decides admission with its own programme rule.
- Of the 24 mathematics programmes we counted, 17 require mathematics for at least two years or four semesters.
- Seven of the 24 programmes (275 of 723 seats, 38.0%) are open to BTech or BE (Bachelor of Engineering) graduates whatever their mathematics: four have no restriction, and IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Roorkee waive the four-semester rule for engineering degrees.
- Count the semesters of mathematics on your transcript before you apply, and email the admitting IIT in writing if the count is borderline.

A BTech (Bachelor of Technology) graduate with three semesters of mathematics can score well in the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) Mathematics paper and still find that most MSc (Master of Science) Mathematics programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will not take the application. The paper does not check the transcript. The programme does, and only after the result.
That order of events is the trap. Applicants spend months on preparation before anyone compares their degree with the admitting IIT's condition, and the condition differs from one IIT to the next.
The JAM 2027 Information Brochure lists 723 MSc Mathematics seats, by our count of its programme table, and the conditions attached to them range from no restriction at all to six semesters of mathematics.
Below, those conditions are sorted so you can see which seats your degree reaches, how to count your semesters, and what to ask an IIT in writing before you pay for a form or a course.
Who is eligible for IIT JAM Mathematics in 2027?
Anyone who has completed an undergraduate degree, or will appear in the final examination of the qualifying degree in 2027, can sit the JAM 2027 Mathematics (MA) paper. The official eligibility page states this, and the official FAQ adds the limits that do not exist.
As of 10 October 2026, applications for JAM 2027 are open on the JAM website until 19 October 2026, and the exam is on 14 February 2027 (Information Brochure, sections 3.1 and 2.2).
As of October 2026, JAM 2027 has:
- no minimum percentage
- no age limit
- no restriction on attempts
- no bar on candidates with backlogs
- no bar on foreign nationals
If you have seen "55% aggregate" quoted for JAM, that is not in the 2027 rules. Percentage thresholds appear in the programme table only for a few non-mathematics programmes, such as 60% for IIT Kanpur's Integrated Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Engineering and IIT Kharagpur's Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. in Nuclear Medicine (Information Brochure, Annexure II).
Why does IIT JAM Mathematics eligibility not guarantee an IIT MSc seat?
Being allowed to sit the paper does not mean being allowed into a programme. To be admitted, you must qualify in the relevant test paper and also meet the Eligibility Requirements and the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) that the admitting IIT sets for that programme, as the Information Brochure states in sections 2.1 and 4.1.2.
Three details in the brochure matter here:
- Degree timing. The undergraduate programme must be completed before the admission date of the IIT you join.
- Proof. You submit proof of passing, with the subjects the MEQ asks for, within that IIT's own timeline.
- Changes. MEQs and seat numbers are "subject to change as per decision of Admitting Institutes". Recheck them when the admission brochure for your cycle appears.
This page covers the 23 admitting IITs. JAM scores are also used for other institutes through Centralised Counselling for M.Sc./M.Sc. (Tech.) Admission (CCMN), and those institutes set their own conditions. For where the exam leads, see what IIT JAM is and where it can lead.
Which IIT MSc Mathematics programmes accept which degree?
Of the 24 mathematics programmes at 21 IITs, 4 accept any degree, 17 need mathematics for two years or four semesters, 1 needs six semesters, and 2 need three mathematics courses. Together they hold 723 seats.
How we counted: we read the MA section of Annexure II (pages 68 to 70) of the JAM 2027 Information Brochure as of October 2026 and sorted each programme by its stated condition. We left out five rows in the same section that belong to other disciplines: IIT Bombay Operations Research, Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar, the Energy Science and Environmental Science dual degrees at IIT Bombay, and Economics at IIT Roorkee. Seats are the brochure's Total column. Numbers in brackets are programme codes.
| Condition in the brochure | Programmes | Count | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| No restrictions | IIT Bombay M.Sc. Mathematics (1206); IIT Gandhinagar M.Sc. Mathematics (2002); IIT Kanpur M.Sc. Mathematics (1502); IIT Tirupati M.Sc. Mathematics & Statistics (3001) | 4 | 147 |
| Mathematics for at least two years/four semesters, and no restrictions for engineering degrees | IIT Delhi M.Sc. Mathematics (1302); IIT Hyderabad M.Sc. Mathematics / Mathematics & Computing (2102); IIT Roorkee M.Sc. Mathematics (1804) | 3 | 128 |
| Mathematics for at least two years/four semesters | IIT Bhilai (2802); IIT Bhubaneswar Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. (1902, Mathematics or Statistics counts); IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (2602); IIT Dharwad (3302); IIT Goa (3401); IIT Guwahati (1402, 1404); IIT Indore (2203); IIT Jodhpur (2402); IIT Madras (1702); IIT Mandi Applied Mathematics (3102); IIT Patna (2502, 2505); IIT Ropar (2301) | 14 | 379 |
| Mathematics or Statistics for six semesters/three years | IIT Kharagpur Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. (1603) | 1 | 38 |
| At least three mathematics courses | IIT Palakkad M.Sc. Mathematics (2902); IIT Tirupati M.Sc. Mathematics (3004) | 2 | 31 |
| Total | 24 | 723 |
Compared with the JAM 2026 Admission Brochure, the mathematics wording we checked is unchanged. Seat totals moved at three IITs: Hyderabad from 30 to 20, Jodhpur from 30 to 40 and Mandi from 15 to 30. That suggests the conditions are stable from year to year, but the seats are not.
Can a BTech or engineering graduate join an IIT MSc Mathematics programme?
Yes, in seven of the 24 programmes. These are the four "no restrictions" programmes plus IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Roorkee, which say "No restrictions for engineering degrees". They hold 275 of the 723 seats: 147 plus 128, or 38.0%.
Three more programmes might work, depending on your transcript:
- IIT Dharwad (15 seats) says a B.Tech or BE in any branch "will be considered", but its stated rule is still mathematics for four semesters. Treat that as a question to ask, not a yes.
- IIT Palakkad and IIT Tirupati (3004) ask for at least three mathematics courses. An engineering transcript with three or more courses carrying "Mathematics" in the title meets that wording on its face. That is our reading, so confirm it with the IIT.
How do you count semesters of mathematics without getting rejected?
Count the semesters of your bachelor's degree in which you took at least one paper whose title is mathematics, or statistics where the programme allows it. The brochure's wording is "Mathematics for at least two years/four semesters". It does not say whether the four have to be consecutive, or whether engineering mathematics, numerical methods or discrete mathematics counts.

That gap is where the confusion sits. A BTech student with mathematics in semesters one, two and four has three semesters, not four, and so does one with three in a row. In our recommendation:
- Count only clear cases. Papers titled Mathematics, Calculus, Linear Algebra or Differential Equations are clear. Probability or Statistics papers count only at IIT Bhubaneswar (1902) and IIT Kharagpur (1603); treat them as borderline everywhere else. Anything else is borderline too.
- Treat borderline papers as unknown, not as a pass. The admitting IIT decides, and it decides after you have paid for the form and the preparation.
- Ask in writing before you commit. A short email costs nothing. Here is a template:
Subject: JAM 2027 Mathematics (MA): M.Sc. Mathematics eligibility query
Dear Sir/Madam, I am a [degree, branch, year] student/graduate of [university]. My transcript shows these mathematics papers: [list each paper title with its semester number]. Programme: M.Sc. Mathematics ([code]). The MEQ asks for "Mathematics for at least two years/four semesters". Will the papers above satisfy this condition? If any will not, please say which. Name, JAM enrolment number (if issued), contact number.
Keep the reply. If the IIT accepts your papers, you have it in writing.
What does your degree mean for your choice of IITs?
Your options follow from how many semesters of mathematics your transcript shows and whether the paper titles are clear. The table below applies the programme counts above; it is our reading of the brochure, not an IIT ruling. The degrees are BSc (Bachelor of Science), BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications), B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) and BA (Bachelor of Arts).
| Your background | Open on paper | Needs an email first |
|---|---|---|
| BSc with mathematics in all six semesters | All 24 programmes (723 seats) | None |
| BSc with mathematics for only one year (two semesters) | The 4 no-restriction programmes (147 seats), plus Palakkad and Tirupati (3004) if you have three mathematics courses (31 seats) | Not open on the brochure's wording for the rest; ask only if a non-mathematics paper might count |
| BTech or BE, any branch | The 7 programmes open to engineers (275 seats) | Dharwad; any other four-semester programme where your transcript shows four semesters of mathematics; Palakkad and Tirupati (3004) |
| BCA with four or more semesters of mathematics | The 4 no-restriction programmes, the two three-course programmes, and 15 of the 17 four-semester programmes (all except Delhi and Dharwad) | IIT Delhi (1302) and IIT Dharwad (3302); Kharagpur, which needs six semesters |
| BCA with fewer than four semesters of mathematics | The 4 no-restriction programmes, plus the three-course pair if you have three courses | Not open on the brochure's wording for the rest; ask only if a non-mathematics paper might count |
| B.Com or BA with mathematics electives | The 4 no-restriction programmes, plus the three-course pair if you have three or more courses: 6 programmes, 178 seats | The four-semester programmes other than Delhi and Dharwad, if the electives span four semesters |
IIT Delhi (1302) and IIT Dharwad (3302) name B.Sc./B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degrees in their conditions, so a BCA, B.Com or BA applicant should ask them before counting those seats.
Where does IIT JAM preparation start once you know you are eligible?
Start IIT JAM Mathematics preparation by finding which topics cost you marks, using a diagnostic test before choosing a course. A diagnostic shows your gaps, so the course you buy covers them rather than chapters you already hold. Take one timed full paper, tag every miss by topic, and rank the topics by marks lost.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Final-year students can apply for JAM 2027 as well as graduates, provided the degree is complete before the admission date of the IIT you join (Information Brochure, section 2.4).
As many as you like: JAM 2027 has no restriction on the number of attempts (official FAQ), so a weak first score does not close the route.
Yes, if the two papers fall in different sessions. In JAM 2027, Mathematics sits in the forenoon session with Chemistry and Geology, so it can be paired with an afternoon paper such as Physics or Mathematical Statistics (Information Brochure, section 2.2).
