GATE Mathematics Eligibility: Who Can Sit the MA Paper
GATE mathematics eligibility depends on degree and year: students in the third year of a bachelor's degree, graduates and master's students can sit the Mathematics paper, but earlier bachelor's years cannot.

Key takeaways
- You can sit the GATE 2027 Mathematics (MA) paper from the third year of a three-year bachelor's degree, the third year of a four-year or integrated programme, or the first year of a master's degree. A completed degree also qualifies.
- As of 10 October 2026, GATE 2027 registration without a late fee closed on 5 October 2026, applications with the late fee are accepted until 12 October 2026, and the correction window runs from 14 to 21 October 2026. Registration needs a verified DigiLocker account.
- The fee payable now is ₹2,500 for one paper or ₹4,500 for two. Women, SC, ST and PwD candidates pay ₹1,500 or ₹2,500.
- The 10+2+3 rule is not new for 2027, and eligibility to sit does not mean every institute accepts your score. Check the paper each institute names.

The same exam accepts a first-year master's student and turns away a second-year bachelor's student, and the only difference is one line in an official table. That line decides whether you prepare for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this cycle or a later one.
The Mathematics paper, code MA, is a real destination for mathematics students: 16,272 candidates registered for the Mathematics paper in GATE 2026. Three questions come up again and again: does my year count, does a degree in a different subject matter, and did the rules change for 2027?
Meeting the eligibility table only lets you sit the exam. Which institutes then accept your score is decided separately, and it is worth confirming before you spend a year preparing. This page gives a table to find your row, the fees payable now, the paper pattern and a check to run before you register, all taken from the official GATE pages.
As of 10 October 2026, GATE 2027 registration without a late fee has closed. Applications with the late fee are accepted until 12 October 2026, and the application correction window runs from 14 to 21 October 2026.
Who meets GATE mathematics eligibility for 2027, degree by degree?
You can sit GATE 2027 if you are in the third year or later of a bachelor's degree, in any year of a master's degree, or have already completed such a degree. The conditions are your degree and your current year, as set in the official GATE 2027 eligibility table. MA (Mathematics) is one of the papers you can choose.
Abbreviations in the table: BSc is Bachelor of Science, BA Bachelor of Arts, BCom Bachelor of Commerce, BCA Bachelor of Computer Applications, BS a four-year science bachelor's degree, MSc and MS Master of Science, and MCA Master of Computer Applications. "MA" also stands for Master of Arts, so on this page "MA paper" always means the Mathematics exam.
| Where you are now | Official condition | Can you sit GATE 2027? |
|---|---|---|
| Three-year BSc, BA, BCom or BCA | Currently in the 3rd year or already completed | Yes, from third year |
| Four-year BSc (Research) or BS | Currently in the 3rd year or higher, or already completed | Yes, from third year |
| Integrated MSc, integrated BS, or MS (five-year integrated BS-MS programme) | Currently in the 3rd year or higher or already completed | Yes, from third year |
| MSc, MA or MCA (any branch of Arts, Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Applications) | Currently in the 1st year or higher, or already completed | Yes, from first year |
| A degree higher than the ones listed | Allowed, per the note under the table | Yes |
| First or second year of a three-year BSc | No row | Not yet |
The same table also lists engineering, architecture, pharmacy, medical and agriculture degrees. A mathematics student will rarely need those rows.
Run four checks before you register:
- Match your degree to a row. Pass: your degree name fits a row in the table. Fail: nothing fits, so contact the GATE office before paying.
- Compare your year. Pass: your current year of study equals or exceeds the year in your row. Fail: you are earlier, so this cycle is not open to you.
- Check your DigiLocker account. DigiLocker is the government's digital document wallet. GATE 2027 registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals, and future communication goes only to the DigiLocker account used for the application. Pass: you can log in to a verified DigiLocker account. Fail: it is unverified or missing, so create or update it first.
- Name the institute. Pass: you can write down one institute that accepts the MA paper for your target programme. Fail: you cannot name one, so do not register for a second paper until you can.
Did a new 10+2+3 rule change who can sit GATE?
No. The GATE 2026 eligibility table already admitted three-year bachelor's students in their third year, and the GATE 2027 table keeps the same rule. "10+2+3" means ten years of school, two years of higher secondary and a three-year bachelor's degree.
We compared the 12 rows of the GATE 2026 eligibility table with the 12 rows of the GATE 2027 table in October 2026. The three-year bachelor's row carries the same year-of-study condition in both: "Currently in the 3rd year or already completed". The only difference we saw in that row is that the 2027 version names BCA alongside BSc, BA and BCom.
If you were told you became eligible only this year, that is not a change in the rule. It matters if you are a second-year student planning ahead, because you still have to reach third year.
What does the GATE 2027 Mathematics paper cost, and is a second paper worth it?
As of 10 October 2026, GATE 2027 costs ₹2,500 for one paper or ₹4,500 for two in the extended period, which carries the late fee and closes on 12 October 2026. Women, SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe) and PwD (persons with benchmark disability) candidates pay ₹1,500 or ₹2,500. The official fee table sets these amounts.
| Candidate | One paper, extended period (late fee, until 12 October 2026) | Two papers, extended period (late fee) | One paper, regular (closed 5 October 2026) | Two papers, regular (closed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST, PwD | ₹1,500 | ₹2,500 | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 |
| All other candidates | ₹2,500 | ₹4,500 | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 |
Our arithmetic from that table: the extended period adds ₹500 to the regular fee for every candidate and paper count, and a second paper adds ₹1,000 for the first group and ₹2,000 for the second in either period.
Mathematics can be paired with Computer Science (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Physics (PH) or Statistics (ST), as listed on the two-paper combination page.
Our recommendation: add a second paper only if an institute you plan to apply to asks for that paper code. If you cannot check institutes before 12 October, a single paper is the cheaper default. A second paper also means preparing a second syllabus.
What does the MA paper test once you are eligible?
The MA paper is a 3-hour test of 100 marks: 15 for General Aptitude and 85 for Mathematics, according to the official question paper pattern. Questions are multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select (MSQ) or numerical answer type (NAT). Wrong MCQ answers lose one-third of a mark (1-mark questions) or two-thirds (2-mark questions), while MSQ and NAT carry no negative marking.

The official MA syllabus has 11 sections:
- Calculus
- Linear Algebra
- Real Analysis
- Complex Analysis
- Ordinary Differential Equations
- Algebra
- Functional Analysis
- Numerical Analysis
- Partial Differential Equations
- Topology
- Linear Programming
As of October 2026, GATE 2027 runs over three weekends in February 2027 (6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February), per the IIT Madras announcement, and results are due on 19 March 2027. A GATE score stays valid for three years from the date results are announced.
If you are also weighing IIT JAM, the Joint Admission Test for MSc, our comparison of the GATE and IIT JAM mathematics syllabus shows where they overlap. For preparation, start with what GATE Maths study material you actually need and where to start with GATE Maths previous papers.
Does GATE eligibility mean your score will be accepted for admission?
No. Eligibility only lets you sit the exam. The official eligibility page states that qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or employment, and that admission is subject to each institute's own eligibility and selection criteria.
Institutes name the qualifications they accept. The Department of Mathematics at IIT Madras (an Indian Institute of Technology) lists a valid GATE score among the accepted qualifications for its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) admission, alongside national fellowship qualifications (page last updated 13 May 2025). As an illustration that institutes name specific papers, IIT Madras's humanities M.A. programmes for the 2026 cycle name the XH (Humanities) paper. That is a humanities example and says nothing about mathematics scores.
For GATE 2026, the official qualifying marks for Mathematics were 34.7 for General, 31.2 for OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes, non-creamy layer) and EWS (Economically Weaker Sections), and 23.1 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Of 16,272 registered, 11,561 appeared, which is about 71% (our calculation: 11,561 ÷ 16,272 = 0.7105). These are last cycle's figures and change each year.
Our recommendation: open the admission page of three institutes you would apply to and note whether each names MA, a second paper, or a different exam. If a PhD at an IIT is your goal, read GATE Mathematics vs CSIR-NET for IIT PhD to compare routes.
