CSIR NET Exam Date: 20 and 21 December 2026, Still Tentative

The CSIR NET exam date for December 2026 is proposed as 20 and 21 December 2026, and it stays tentative until the official application notice and your admit card confirm it.

By Sunil Bansal, Founder · Updated 3 Oct 2026

A student works through a handwritten maths problem set at a desk beside a window, with textbooks and a wall calendar nearby.

Key takeaways

  • The CSIR NET exam date for the December 2026 cycle is proposed as 20 and 21 December 2026 in NTA's calendar of 16 September 2026.
  • As of 3 October 2026 no December application notice is out. Our model puts the form opening between 3 and 30 October 2026 and closing between about 26 October and 28 November 2026.
  • Your day and shift are printed on your admit card, and the proposed dates are also the UGC NET's buffer days, so keep both days free.
  • In the June 2026 bulletin, the Mathematical Sciences paper is 200 marks in 180 minutes, and Part C carries 95 marks with no negative marking.

The days proposed for the CSIR NET in December 2026 are also the days the National Testing Agency (NTA) has set aside as spare capacity for a different exam, the University Grants Commission (UGC) NET. A date that shares its slot with another exam's contingency is one to hold loosely, and to plan around carefully.

The window to act is short. NTA conducts the Joint CSIR-UGC NET for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the UGC. It kept the June 2026 application form open for 24 days, from 27 May to 19 June 2026, according to its public notice of 27 May 2026.

Below, the facts that are settled are separated from those still expected. The likely opening of the form is worked out from earlier cycles, and a checklist covers what to finish before it opens. Mathematical Sciences candidates also get the paper structure, because that is where the remaining weeks should go.

When is the CSIR NET exam date for the December 2026 cycle?

NTA's calendar proposes 20 and 21 December 2026 for the Joint CSIR-UGC NET December cycle, a two-day computer-based test (CBT). The calendar calls its dates tentative, open to change for administrative, academic, statutory, logistical or other unforeseen reasons, and says it is not a notification for any exam. As of 3 October 2026, NTA's notice archive holds the calendar but no December application notice.

Do the UGC NET buffer days put 20 and 21 December at risk?

They are a scheduling risk, not a confirmed clash. NTA's calendar lists the UGC NET December cycle for 14 to 19 December 2026 with buffer days on 20 and 21 December, the same two days proposed for the CSIR NET. Our inference is that buffer days exist to absorb disruption, so keep both days free until you hold your admit card.

The June 2026 exam ran on two days, 17 and 18 July 2026, in two shifts: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The June 2026 bulletin says your centre, date and shift are "as mentioned on the Admit Card". The December 2026 calendar again lists two days, so the notice and your admit card decide which one is yours. Do not book travel or leave on either day before then.

When will the CSIR NET application form open for December 2026?

Our model puts the opening between 3 and 30 October 2026, with the form closing 24 to 30 days later, so between about 26 October and 28 November 2026. This is our model from two cycles, not an official date. The application notice sets the real window.

The inputs come from the December 2025 bulletin and the June 2026 bulletin.

Our working:

  • Opening dates: counting 84 days back from 20 December 2026 gives 27 September, which has passed with no notice, so that gap no longer applies. Counting 51 days back gives 30 October. A later opening would leave less lead time than either cycle gave.
  • Closing dates: the earliest is 3 October plus a 24-day window, which is 26 October. The latest is 30 October plus a 30-day window, which is 28 November.
  • Corrections: the correction window that followed was 27 to 29 October 2025 in one cycle and 22 to 23 June 2026 in the other. Fill the form correctly the first time.

Check the CSIR NET portal every few days from now.

How many weeks of preparation do you really have before 20 December 2026?

From 3 October to 20 December 2026 there are 78 days, or 11 weeks and 1 day. The form date does not change your study time. Your 78 days run to 20 December whenever the form opens, so submit the form in the first week it opens and spend the rest of the time on preparation.

Hands arrange a row of blank paper strips on a study plan sheet, beside a notebook and pencil on a desk.
Eleven weeks is enough time to cover a syllabus when the study plan is laid out week by week.
On this dateDays left to 20 December 2026Weeks
3 October 20267811 weeks 1 day
15 October 2026669 weeks 3 days
30 October 2026517 weeks 2 days

Our recommendation: spend the final seven weeks on full-length timed practice and the weeks before that on syllabus gaps. Holding an average of 3 minutes per attempted question takes repeated timed sets, not extra reading. If you have not yet found your weak units, our CSIR-NET mathematics preparation guide shows how to sort them first.

What does the Mathematical Sciences paper reward, and could it change for December 2026?

In the June 2026 bulletin, the Mathematical Sciences paper is 200 marks over 180 minutes, and Part C alone carries 95 of them. The December 2026 bulletin will confirm whether anything has changed. The scheme below is identical in the December 2025 bulletin.

A student works through a long proof on a large sheet of paper with a thick textbook open beside them.
Part C rewards this kind of sustained, multi-step problem solving, which is where 95 of the 200 marks sit.
PartQuestionsAttemptMarks eachMaximumWrong answer
A2015230−0.5
B4025375−0.75
C60204.7595none
Total12060200

Our arithmetic on the June 2026 scheme:

  • Part C is 47.5% of the marks (95 of 200), Part B is 37.5% and Part A is 15%.
  • Sixty attempted questions in 180 minutes is an average of 3 minutes each.
  • A wrong answer in Part A or B costs 25% of that question's marks.
  • A Part C question can have one or more correct options, and credit comes only if you identify all of them.

Our recommendation: attempt all 20 Part C questions, since a guess costs nothing but time. Keep Part A and B guesses selective.

CSIR invited feedback on a revised syllabus for Mathematical Sciences between 13 April and 14 May 2026. Until the December 2026 bulletin names the syllabus in force, study the current one. Our CSIR NET Mathematical Sciences syllabus explainer maps its three parts and four units.

One more change affects another subject. CSIR's notice of 13 January 2026 merges the CSIR-NET Life Sciences exam and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) exam for Biotechnology into one Joint CSIR-UGC-DBT examination for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and lectureship, intended from the December 2026 cycle. The notice concerns the biological sciences and announces no change for Mathematical Sciences.

What should you finish before the application notice appears?

Finish five checks, each with a pass or fail result, before the notice appears. The rules below are from the June 2026 bulletin, and the December 2026 bulletin will confirm them.

  1. 1

    Percentage test

Your Master's aggregate, without rounding off, must be at least 55% for General and General-EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates, or at least 50% for OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes, non-creamy layer), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), persons with disabilities (PwD or PwBD) and third gender candidates. Final-year students and those awaiting results can apply provisionally. They must pass with the required percentage within two years of the CSIR NET result, or one year if they qualify for PhD admission only. Pass: at or above your category's mark, or provisional with a result due. Fail: a completed result below it, even by 0.1%.
  2. 2

Age test, for the JRF only

The bulletin sets a limit of not more than 30 years on the first day of the month the exam concludes. Applied to 1 December 2026, our arithmetic gives these dates. Pass: born on or after 1 December 1996. If you are a woman applicant or in a relaxed category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, PwBD or third gender), you can pass if born on or after 1 December 1991, because the bulletin allows relaxation of up to 5 years, capped at 5 years in total. Fail: born before the date that applies to you. Assistant Professor and PhD admission have no upper age limit.
  3. 3

    Fee test

The June 2026 fee was ₹1,150 for General, ₹600 for General-EWS or OBC-NCL, and ₹325 for SC, ST, PwD, PwBD and third gender candidates, payable by card, net banking or UPI. In both recent cycles the fee deadline fell one day after the form closed. Pass: you hold a payment confirmation before that deadline. Fail: a payment that is pending or failed at the deadline.
  4. 4

    File test

Upload your photograph as JPG or JPEG between 10 KB and 200 KB, and your full signature in running handwriting, on white paper in blue or black ink, as JPG or JPEG between 10 KB and 50 KB. A name in capital letters is rejected. Category, PwD or PwBD and Result Awaited attestation certificates must be PDFs between 50 KB and 300 KB. Pass: every file sits inside its range and opens cleanly. Fail: any file outside its range.
  5. 5

    Timing test

Take one full set of 60 questions, 15 from Part A, 25 from Part B and 20 from Part C, under timed conditions. Pass: all 60 attempted inside 180 minutes. Fail: anything unattempted when the clock runs out.
